Miramar Engineering is home to some very talented steam engineers. We provide steam support and installation to high street brand production facilities and medical facilities alike.
All too often steam is treated as just another mechanical service and not given the correct respect – quite surprising when you consider the risk it can offer. Miramar’s engineers all start their steam experience with a visit to Spirax training centre where they undergo the introduction to steam course. From there they have been able to work along our more experienced engineers and on a vast array of equipment and eventually they progress with further training into competent steam engineers.
Steam has some fantastic properties when used correctly owing to its high heat energy carrying capabilities. In the factory environment it offers a ready to use heat source for a number of uses from cooking to hot water production as well as hygienic services such as tray washers and disinfection.
Superheated steam is generated using a boiler, the system converts liquid or saturated steam into superheated steam by creating a temperature higher than its boiling point. High pressures are used to create fast, clean heat which is then transferred to the connected commercial appliances.
There are 3 stages to the ‘Superheated Steam Cycle’:
Production
Liquid or saturated steam heated to a temperature higher than its boiling point
Distribution
Superheated steam is created and passed through valve/s, the pressure is increased/reduced in order to meet the desired temperature for the appliances
Application
Clean superheated steam is used to heat the appliance to the correct temperature
Superheated steam is an efficient way of creating high temperatures and the solutions are commonly used for commercial food production and sterilisation.
Superheated steam is measured in bar g, our steam solutions have a maximum temperature of 10 bar g, which is more than substantial for the commercial food industry.
One of the main advantages of superheated steam is that different temperatures can be created from the same system, using multiple vacuums. As the steam passes through the vacuums the pressure is increased or reduced to create the desired temperature, therefore multiple appliances, requiring different temperatures, can be heated using the same system. Superheated steam is a very versatile and efficient way of generating heat as it produces heat better than any other solution.
Once the system is set up and becomes more efficient, the biproduct will be reusable, adding to the efficiency of the system.
There isn’t a one size fits all. A superheated steam system is a specialised solution that requires careful design, in order to ensure maximum efficiency.
The size of the equipment will depend on the requirements, for example if 1 temperature is required the equipment will be smaller compared to when 2 temperatures are required, as there will be multiple elements. It will also depend on how much steam is required and how quick the steam needs to move through the system.
Our engineers will work with you to ensure the system created is specific to your company needs. One of our team will arrange a site visit to understand what the desired result is e.g., the appliances needing to be heated, the speed and volume. The equipment will then be designed based on the desired output; therefore the correct size and number of components will be used to ensure maximum efficiency, specific to your company requirements.
The safety of a steam system is directly related to its maintenance and upkeep. Second to that is the efficiency. Miramar’s engineers are suitable trained and experienced to keep your steam infrastructure maintained, safe and running at peek performance. We can offer ad-hoc support or full comprehensive maintenance packages.
Due to the systems being self-propelling, there are not many parts to this type of equipment. However, that doesn’t mean, little or no maintenance is required. If a fracture occurs in any part of the system the breakdown can be very disruptive, resulting in costly repairs and production downtime.
We would always advise to ensure you keep up the service and maintenance on any piece of equipment. This ensures any issues are discovered and repaired in advance, avoiding large distributions to production.
Superheated steam solutions can become disruptive overtime with extensive use, as the steam is trying to constantly escape. For this reason, pipework maintenance and upkeep are required to ensure no leaks or steam losses. In contrast, if the system has not been in use the pipework could shrink due to the lack of heat being circulated, therefore a service should be carried out before the equipment is used.
The number of checks required will depend on the usage, we would normally advise 2-3 checks a year to ensure maximum efficiencies, the minimum would be once a year.
In addition to designing and installing systems, we also offer surveys on any steam solution that has not been installed by Miramar. The survey will check efficiencies, equipment and quality. Our customers typically use this service to check the installation of equipment installed by another business. Our engineers will complete a full mechanical survey which includes checking the equipment is to industry standard as well as the safety, design and efficiency of the system. Once completed, a full report will be provided detailing the results (repair, fault finding etc,) and include any impartial recommendations.
Surprisingly there are no regulations for superheated steam. For this reason, it is even more critical that your steam solution is designed, installed and maintained by a trusted, trained professional engineer. Companies regularly request Miramar to complete a survey on a solution installed by another company to ensure the industry standard has been met, due to the lack of regulations.
All our engineers are fully trained and continuously ensure that their knowledge and skills are above industry standard. The specifications are constantly changing, and therefore we ensure our team are up to date with the latest specifications.
As a business we want to ensure our customers are getting the most from their equipment, we understand the importance of efficiency and minimal repairs. Therefore, we take extensive care when designing any piece of equipment and deliver a comprehensive service and maintenance package. We also want to ensure that the work in the industry meets the standard requirements, that’s why we offer impartial advice on any equipment not supplied by Miramar with no obligations for ongoing work.
The chances are that in the last week you will of eaten a product that’s passed through a Miramar serviced steam system, our service and dedication to your operation is what keeps us as the first choice for so many users.
